Program: Lessons from the Freeze. Speaker Mary Howe Hawkins
Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis thanked all members for coming and gave special thanks to board members who worked so hard to organize our meetings for the next year. The increase in Covid19 over the summer spiked our plans to have meetings in member houses for the near future. After considering using Fleming Park with Zoom as a backup in case of poor weather, Alex Tyson contacted The Raven Grill and we will be using their outside patio for our five general meetings this year. Decisions on the Christmas luncheon, January board meeting, Flower Show and May luncheon will be made later. The disadvantages of the Raven Grill are the cost ~$250 for coffee and muffins and we have to vacate the premises by 11:15AM.
Yearbook—Janet Kohlhase
Special thanks to Janet for making multiple changes as we rearranged the schedule for the coming year. New inserts for the yearbook were provided to members as they paid their dues.
Corresponding secretary—Rebecca Garfield
Thanks to Rebecca for keeping everyone updated.
Membership—Analisa Frazier
If you do not have a nametag in the box, contact Analisa and she will get one for you.
Social chairs—Sydney Jelinek and Alex Tyson
Sydney and Alex arranged for hostesses and co-hostesses for the year and Alex made the arrangements with the Raven Grill.
Treasurer—Sandy Foor
We have a balance of $6978.21 in the treasury. The audit (Barbara and Ginger Clark and Lee Tawse) was perfect. If you have not yet paid your dues please send $80 to Sandy and she will give you the new yearbook insert.
Recording Secretary—Ginger Clark
May minutes have been approved and posted to the website. Tonya and Analisa will proof the September minutes.
Fleming Park Pollinator Garden—Mary Howe Hawkins
Unfortunately, the COH crew clear cut the garden several weeks ago. Only the Turks Cap and Esperanza were spared. Phyllis provided some compost and a few rain lilies have bloomed. Mary wants to add a small vertical sign identifying the garden and to add plant labels to make it an educational garden.
Programs—Carmen Wright
Thanks to Carmen for arranging the program and setting up the audiovisual equipment at the new location.

October 7, 2021
Program: Native Plants for Birds” Speaker: Diana Foss
Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis called the meeting to order and thanked the volunteer Hostess, Edie and Co-hostesses, Mary Bradshaw, Sydney Jelinek and Beverly Wiemer.
Recording Secretary—Ginger Clark
The September minutes have been approved and posted to the website. Mary Bradshaw and Sydney have agreed to proof the October minutes.
Treasurer—Sandy Foor
The balance in the treasury is $6828.21. Carolynne White proposed that we pay for a firewall for the website as it was recently the victim of a redirect hack. Sandy made the motion to approve the purchase and Ginger seconded it. It was approved. The next subject was donations. Last year because of Covid we made a donation to the Houston Food Bank of $250. Alex Tyson suggested that we bring non-perishable food for the Food Bank to the November meeting. We always make a donation to the Poinsetta Fund. Sandy suggested that we could donate to the Star of Hope for Thanksgiving. About 80% of our donations are gardening-related.
Social chairs—Sydney Jelinek and Alex Tyson
Alex suggested we have our Christmas luncheon at The Raven Grill as our meetings there are working out well. The December meeting would start at 10AM followed by the luncheon. Normally we have about 35 members for the luncheon so we should have enough space. We had lower attendance at meetings last year because of Covid. Alex suggested bringing an old holiday ornament, wrapped, for a gift exchange. Beverly suggested making one. For the time being we will continue holding meetings at The Raven Grill although the openness of the patio which makes it safer during Covid makes it difficult to see projected material. Possibly hanging the cloths we use to cover tables for the horticulture exhibits at the Flower Show could help. Our November meeting will have a speaker who plans to use a PowerPoint presentation. If we can’t make it work at The Raven, Kay Martin has offered her house as a backup.
Fleming Park Pollinator Garden—Lee Tawse
The garden has been replanted and is looking much better. Lee requested that if you are passing by Fleming Park and notice that it’s dry to take the hose and water it.
Green Thumb—Sue Bleakie
Sue gave everyone a list of the October’s upcoming garden events.
Federation—Carolynne White
The Federation Gala will be the second Friday in December. Tickets will be $35 each. The designer featured last year will be returning. There will be wassail, a silent auction and live music. The plant sale is next month at the Trinity Episcopal Church on Friday and Saturday the 12th and 13th of November. The next meeting will be at 10:30AM Friday October 8.
Nominating Committee—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis asked for volunteers for the nominating committee. Alex Tyson, Mary Swift and Gail Viehle volunteered to serve
President’s Report—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis needs to know who is a Flower show Judge, accredited? Emeritus? Life? or Student? Who is a master gardener? Are there any other projects besides the Pollinator Garden. Rebecca will be sending out a survey to the members to collect the data Phyllis needs for the report.
Program—Carmen Wright
Carmen introduced our speaker, Diana Foss, an expert urban wildlife biologist at Texas Parks and Wildlife, who spoke on “Native Plants for Birds”.

Program: Roses: “”Things I Wished I had Learned Sooner” Speaker: Baxter Williams
Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis called the meeting to order and thanked the volunteer Hostess, Carolyn Corbett and co-hostesses Sandy Foor, Lee Tawse and Carolynne White.
Recording Secretary—Ginger Clark
The October minutes were proofed by Mary Bradshaw and Sydney Jelinek and have been posted to the website.
Treasurer’s report—Sandy Foor
The balance in the treasury is $8641.62. We still have twenty five to thirty members who have not yet paid their dues. Sandy will be sending out reminder letters soon.
Membership—Analisa Frazier
We had two guests in attendance, Jackie McCreary, the guest of Alex Tyson and Penny Preston, the guest of Sandy Foor.
Social Co-chairs—Alex Tyson and Sydney Jelinek
We will have the December meeting at The Raven starting at 10:30AM followed by lunch from 11:00AM-12:30PM. There will be a limited menu with a choice of salmon or steak salad or soup and salad. Rebecca will send out an email requesting members’ choices in advance. We will also have a tacky ornament exchange. If you buy one keep the price under $10.00.
Flower Show Co-chairs—Ginger Clark, Sandy Foor and Lee Tawse
Since the 2021 Flower Show was cancelled because of Covid-19 after a lot of work by Sarah, Alex and Connie had gone into the preparation, we’ve decided to use that work for the 2022 Flower Show. Beth Zdeblick has graciously offered again to host the show and the reception that evening. Ginger passed around a signup sheet for Flower Show Committee that listed the 2021 volunteers alongside the slots for 2022. We’re hoping most will be willing to do the tasks they signed up for before this year. Likewise, we have the pictures of the placements and will be asking first the people who signed up before if they’d like to do that design this year and then asking other members of the club to sign up.
Federation--Carolynne White
Carolynne was out of town but sent a summary that Phyllis read to us. The program for Federation on Nov 12 is a delightful journey through the gardens of Europe.
The Plant Sale and Food drive will be on Nov 13 from 10AM-1PM. Both events will be at Trinity Church on Main and Holman. If you have plants or food and cannot attend they can be dropped off at Carolynne’s on the 11th or 12th. Please call her to discuss a convenient time.
Also, there are still tickets available for the Holiday Gala on Dec 10. Tickets are $35. They are having a toy drive for Star of Hope, a silent auction, and wassail with live music and a light lunch. We didn’t use the gift we purchased last year (because of Covid-19) and will present
it this year. Alex moved and Analisa seconded that we donate the $35 we would have spent on a gift to the Botanical Gardens. The motion was approved.
You still have time to order poinsettias from Brookwood Gardens. See the recent Federation Newsletter that Rebecca forwarded to the Club.
Green Thumb Events—Sue Bleakie
Sue highlighted several events at the Botanic Garden. Lightscape, which is similar to ZooLights, opens to the public on Saturday, November 19, 2021 and runs through Sunday, January 2, 2022. Interest was expressed in organizing a Club excursion to see the Lightscape Show and then perhaps at a later date, visit the Botanic Garden during the day. Specific dates will be discussed at the December meeting.
Nomination committee—Alex Tyson, Mary Swift, and Gail Viele.
We have volunteers for every position except President and Flower Show Committee. Phyllis offered to help the new President with the Report and would provide templates for documents to ease the transition. The 2023 Flower Show will be a small, informal unjudged show; possibly we could do a workshop.
Programs—Carmen Wright
Carmen introduced our speaker, Baxter Williams, a life Member and Patron of the American Rose Society who received the Silver Medal for Outstanding Service. A Horticulture Judge, Master Consulting Rosarian and three times past President of the Houston Rose Society. He spoke on “Roses: Things I Wished I had Learned Sooner”.
Mr. Williams was delightfully informative and entertaining and the Club greatly enjoyed his presentation.

Social Co-chairs—Alex Tyson and Sydney Jelinek
The committee organized the luncheon at The Raven, provided lovely centerpieces for the tables, and organized the gift exchange that immediately followed the meeting.
Flower Show Co-chairs—Ginger Clark, Sandy Foor and Lee Tawse
With the help of Joanne Storm, we have three judges committed for the show, Corrie Ten-Haven and Cheryl Lenert who were to have judged the 2020 show and Heather White who judged our virtual show last year. Pictures of the placements available at Beth Zdeblick’s house where the show will be held along with sign-up sheets for both positions on the flower show committee and for design slots were circulated. There are still plenty of both available.
Federation--Carolynne White
Federation will have their Christmas meeting next Friday. Carolynne will bring the donations for the Star of Hope Mission collected today to the meeting. Federation will have about 100 poinsettias available for sale. They buy them yearly from Brookwood, a development for the mentally handicapped that has a large horticultural enterprise. The Southampton Garden Club provides refreshments for the Federation meeting in January. Kate Hughes and Ginger Clark volunteered to provide them.
Excursions—Beth Zdeblick and Julie Baker.
The proposed excursion to the Houston Botanical Garden’s holiday light show was cancelled because of lack of interest.
Nominations committee--Mary Swift, Alex Tyson, and Gail Viele
Mary was unable to attend so the following slate was presented by Alex. We are still missing a president and members for the flower show committee. It was suggested that we consider having co-presidents. The flower show is going to be a small, informal unjudged show.
