Minutes for September 5, 2024
Welcome: Ginger Clark
Ginger welcomed all back .
She expressed regrets for the budget over runs and gratitude for both Mary’s help with accounting and the ideas put forward to address the issue.

Volunteers to proof minutes: Phyllis Carney and Barbara Clark
Treasurer: Mary Swift
Dues of $80 payable to ‘Southampton Garden Club’. are due. Mary can now accept Zelle and Venmo.
We have some unfortunate news. Last year we spent $7804.55, quite a bit more than the $4460 we received in dues. We currently have $950.03 remaining. Mary has prepared a spread sheet showing financials for 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 and a proposed budget for 2024-2025. Suggestions for improving our situation include cutting back on catering by returning to members bringing side dishes, increasing dues (would require a member vote), limiting speakers’ fees or balancing fees with speakers’ sales, soliciting donations (we are a 501C3 so they would be tax deductible), printing yearbook in black and white and having more meetings in members’ homes rather than at the Raven.
Absolutely essential is to use our sales tax exemption form. It must be submitted at the point of purchase.
After discussion, a motion was put forward, seconded and passed to have members sponsor meetings at the Raven, the Flower Show, and the Christmas Luncheon. The motion passed and a sign-up sheet was circulated.
Bob Ittner generously volunteered to sponsor the yearbook.
As we’ll need to do multiple things to stay solvent, a motion was put forward, seconded, and passed to request that the board create a more formal budget, which would then be voted on by members.
Yearbook: Janet Kohlhase is pleased to have it completed. Save the back page from last year. She expressed thanks to Phyllis for her help with photos and the memoriam for Betty Schooler.
Yearbooks will be handed out as dues are paid.
Parliamentarian: Diane Kaplan
A vote was held on amending Section 1of Article III of the By-laws. The changes suggested are highlighted in red.
Section 1: Membership shall be drawn from territory bounded by the following streets: Bissonnet, Mandell, Rice Blvd, and Kirby Drive. An active member moving out of this area may retain full membership. In exceptional cases an individual not living within the prescribed boundaries but who has a strong interest in joining and participating in club activities could be proposed for membership. They would have to fulfill the requirements of Section 2 and in addition their admission would require an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the members present. The vote to accept the new member shall take place at the meeting after the prospective member’s third meeting and the prospective member should not be present during the meeting.
Following further discussion, the motion to amend did not pass.
There was discussion to amend the boundaries for club membership. A committee may be formed in the future to consider a potential change to Section 1 to move our north membership boundary to Banks or Vassar and submit at a future meeting.
Flower Show:
Carmen Wright and Carolynne White passed around a list for volunteers for Horticulture, design chairs, clerks, etc. Theme is Going for Olympic Gold.
Website:
Rebecca reported the site was down due to a renewal glitch, but will be back on line in 2 days.
Pollinator Garden and Horticulture: Mary Howe and Lee Tawse
Garden survived the summer well and needs little attention right now, but would like to find native butterfly weed to add.
Two notes: Don’t be tempted to buy fall flowers now and PLEASE use a responsible arborist for your tree pruning.
Excursions:
Julie Baker and Sarah Balinskas We had a delightful visit to the Houston Botanical Garden this summer before Beryl. Unfortunately, the Garden was seriously damaged by Beryl. Julie has suggested that we could do something as a club to help them recover and possibly schedule another trip there in the spring.
Julie suggested a future Excursion to Maas Nurserywith a picnic at the adjacent park.
Green Thumb Events Chair:
This position is open.
Federation Liaisons: Carolynne White & Phyllis Carney
Program: Angela Roth “Vertical Gardening and Unusual Containers”

Betty Schoolar’s Gift
Betty Schoolar’s daughter Katherine gave the Garden Club Betty’s vases and other design materials. Betty was a very active member of the Houston garden community for many years. A memorial to her is on page 48 of our yearbook. Four designs in vases from Betty Schoolar will be auctioned off at the December luncheon and we will be donating two of the vases as auction items to both District IV and the Houston Federation of Garden Club. The remainder of the material, located in Ginger Clark’s garage, is available for sale to members, $25 for large vases and $10 for small vases or items.
