Southampton Garden Club

September 8, 2022

Program:  Cheryl Lenert “Closed Atmosphere-Single Species Planters”

Welcome:  Phyllis Carney welcomed everyone to our first meeting.  She promised we would have more fun and learning than meeting time this year.

Moment of Silence:  Phyllis then requested a Moment of Silence for both world peace and peace within our country.  Diane Kaplan asked that we add the children of Uvalde.

Birthdays:  Our September birthdays are Analisa Frazier (8), Carolyn Corbett (9), Edie Archer (10), Kay Martin (13), Ann Hightower (14), Jacki McCreary (17), and Beth Zdeblick (28)

Membership:  Pat Burgess and Analiza Frazier had received the letters of recommendation for the two candidates for membership who had attended three meetings, Joanne Cuadra and Laura Bellows.  The Club voted to approve them for membership.  Gail Viele had a guest, Kristin Loden, who is the wife of the new director of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

Recording Secretary and Website:  Ginger Clark  The May minutes have been proof read and posted to the website.  Beth Zdeblick and Rebecca Garfield have volunteered to proof the September minutes.  The website has been updated with the programs for this year and the changes in membership.  If any errors are found or updates are necessary please notify Ginger Clark at vaclark1828@swbell.net with the necessary changes.  Mary Swift had asked where the reimbursement request form and the sales tax for were on the website.  The reimbursement request form is under Resources which can be found at the top of the home page.  The sales tax form should have been in the same location but wasn’t.  It has since been added and both can be found under Resources.

Yearbook:  Janet Kohlhase  Yearbooks were ready to hand out at the meeting as soon as dues were collected.  Janet thanked everyone who helped; it took a village to pull it together.  There was one error, Kate Hughes’address was listed as 1918 South Blvd.  It’s 1818 South Blvd.  Janet, being an economist, couldn’t help but note that in a group as large as ours there was a greater than 50% chance that two people would have the same birthday.  We have two cases, March with Ann Ahuero and Joanne King both having birthdays on the 28th and November with Susan Bishop and Caroline Ellsworth-Rucker both having birthdays on the 24th.

Treasurer:  Mary Swift  Bank The bank balance is $5,771.70 as of September 8, 2022.   The books were successfully audited over the summer by Joanne Storm and Ginger Clark with only a few minor errors that were corrected.  There is one check for $50.00 to the HFGC Poinsettia fund that was never cashed.  Mary reminded everyone that when buying items for the Club to use the tax-exempt number as she cannot reimburse for sales tax.

Social Chairs:  Alex Tyson and Sydney Jelinek.  Kate Hughes has agreed to hostess our February meeting.

Fleming Park, Horticulture, Southampton Centennial Celebration Garden Tour:  Mary Howe Hawkins       Mary unfortunately could not attend the meeting as she tested positive for COVID.  She has asked Phyllis if her house could be featured on the Garden Tour because of the variety of trees Phyllis has planted over the years.  The tour will take place on March 11, 2023.  Mary requested that the Club support the Tour by buying an ad for $500.00 in the program.  The purchase was approved.  Sarah Balinskas is also working on the Tour.  There were some questions about the Tour such as were they going to sell tickets and if so where would any money collected go.

Federation:  Phyllis Carney  The Federation program to be held Friday, September 9 at 10:30AM will be held at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church on Buffalo Speedway at Bissonnet.

Green Thumb:  BethZdeblick.  Beth distributed copies of Green Thumb to the membership.  She’s also had it sent digitally.  She included web links to the different locations featured in the document so that one can click on the digital copy and immediately go to the event or location.

Mary Swift introduced Cheryl Lenert for the program “Closed Atmosphere-Single Species Planters

Following the program there was a drawing with winners picked from the numbers on the sign-in sheet.  Ginger Clark and Pat Burgess won Cheryl’s closed container and a succulent planting, respectively.

By-Laws Change:  It is proposed to make official the informal change that we made to the September meeting because of Labor Day.  The amended article listed below will be voted on at the November meeting.

Article XI Meetings

Section 1.  Regular meetings shall be held the first Thursday after Labor Day and the first Thursday each month from October through May, excluding January, unless otherwise provided by the Executive Board, at the hours and place designated in the Yearbook.

A copy of the change was handed out to each member attending the meeting and will be emailed to the remaining members.

May 2023

Southampton Garden Club

 May 4, 2023

Program:  Luncheon and installation of officers

Welcome:  Phyllis welcomed everyone to the meeting.  She thanked hostess Julie Baker and co-hostesses Mary Bradshaw, Ginger Clark, Sherrie Glass, Tonya Judah and Gail Viele.

By-laws:  Two amendments to the by-laws were discussed. The first proposed change was to take references to gender out of our by-laws (Article IX, Section 1 below).

Article IX Duties of the Officers

Section 1:

  1. The President shall preside at all meetings of the club and the Executive Board, and shall appoint all committee chairmen.  SheThe President shall be an ex-officio member of all committees except the Nominating Committee.

Alex Tyson made a motion to approve the change as written which was seconded by Mary Swift.  The changed amendment was unanimously approved.

The next change proposed was to add (Article XI Section1 below) that the April Flower Show will be the second Thursday of the month if Easter falls on the Sunday after the first Thursday in April.    Carolynne White made a motion to approve the change as written which was seconded by Sherrie Glass.  The changed amendment as written was unanimously approved.

Article XI Meetings

Section 1.  Regular meetings shall be held the first Thursday after Labor Day and the first Thursday each month from October through May, excluding January unless otherwise provided by the Executive Board, at the hours and place designated in the Yearbook.  Note: April Flower Show is the second Thursday IF Easter falls on the Sunday after the first Thursday in April.

Suggestions for further changes were made by Sarah Balinskas to do away with voting on new members and just accept them after they have attended three meetings.  Carolynne White proposed that we change the status of emeritus members to honorary members.  The reason for this change would be to avoid having to pay the $8.00 dues required by District IV.  It was decided to table these proposals until next year.

Membership:  Bob Ittner has attended the requisite three meetings and we have received three letters of recommendation for him.  He was voted in and is our first male member.  Emeritus membership was proposed for Peggy Vineyard.   After discussion of Peggy having been President 2 years, Program chair and Social chair in addition to hosting multiple Flower Shows and meetings/luncheons there was a motion by Mary Swift to make Peggy Vineyard Emeritus, it was seconded by Mary Bradshaw and unanimously approved.  Sarah Balinskas introduced her guest, Nancy Bolduc who lives in the 1900 block of Wroxton.  She had also attended our Flower Show cocktail party.  She is interested in joining SGC.

Social:  A sign-up sheet was passed around for hostesses and co-hostesses for next year’s meetings by Laura Bellows.   Anne Gorman volunteered to host the 2024 Flower Show.  We still need volunteers for the December, January and February meetings.

Birthdays: In the interest of time Phyllis omitted listing the birthdays for April, May, June, July and August.  They are as follows:

April:  Janet Kohlhase (4)

May: Bev Weimer (18), Carmen Wright (31)

June:  Gail Viele (15), Maggie Dalthorp (21), Mary Bradshaw (30)

July:  Leslie King (4), Susan Broer (7), Lorene Williams (8), Pat Burgess (16), Mary Howe Hawkins (29)

August:  Sandra Wilson (7), Tonya Judah (18), Ginger Clark (20), Jill Satterwhite (25), Rebecca Garfield (27)

Ellena Dickerson, whose birthday was on March 21, thanked Phyllis for the flowers from the SGC but Phyllis had no idea who sent them and would like to know who it was to thank her.

Treasurer’s report:  We have 61 members including 8 emeritus members.  Our balance is $4949.87 after accounting for the flower show expenses.  Mary Swift needs all requests for reimbursements of expenses for this year submitted by the end of May.  We need three volunteers to be on the audit committee.  Rebecca Garfield and Carolynne White volunteered.

Minutes:  The minutes of the March meeting have been proofed and posted to the website.  Lee Tawse and Rebecca Garfield offered to proof the May minutes.

Yearbook:  June 1st is the deadline for submissions to next year’s yearbook such as pictures of new members, updated pictures of members or corrections to or changes to phone numbers or addresses.  Janet will send out an announcement to the club with her preferred email address for receiving pictures submitted for the yearbook.  Phyllis suggested that information about how to prepare horticulture samples for the Flower Show should be added to the yearbook.

Since we have to redo the yearbook cover this year to include the city and state, we decided to change the illustrations on the cover and the title page and add a picture to the back cover.  Three pictures were to be chosen for the front and back covers and the title page at this meeting.  Three artists in our membership, Lorene, Alex and Kate, submitted a number of candidates.  Mary Howe Hawkins chose two from each artist and the membership was instructed to choose one from each artist and put their ballot in a box.  Janet will decide placement based on which one fits best in each location.

Awards:  Phyllis announced that SGC received a First Place at the District IV Convention for our Yearbook edited by Janet Kohlhase.  We also received Honorable Mention for our Website and President’s Report.
