REPORTS
Zoom Team: Ann Hightower did a magnificent job of running the Zoom meeting. Although we would all prefer to meet in person, Zoom did permit out-of-town members like Susan Broer, Sherrie Glass, and Pam Hess to join us.
Yearbook– Janet Kohlhase – Thank you Janet The yearbook presented a special challenge this year because Covid19 had forced us to postpone the flower show. The format of the yearbook was changed and to replace the flower show photographs club members submitted pictures from their gardens to Janet which were used to illustrate the yearbook. We now just replace the body of the yearbook and keep the appendices; just remove the old and replace with the new pages.
Website–Carolynne White Updates are in place! If you spot any misinformation or even a misspelling, please email Carolynne with corrections.
Federation News- Joanne Storm Carolynne White presented the Federation news as Joanne was having computer problems. Federation will have their first meeting on September 11 via Zoom. Federation can accommodate up to 500 people on their Zoom session. They will have a large plant sale on October 10, outdoors at the First Christian Church. Rebecca will send an invitation to club members.
Treasurer– Sandy Foor Dues are due by October 15! Sandy and Phyllis collected dues and handed out yearbooks between1-2pm at Fleming Park following the meeting. The treasury contains $5334.44, more than we typically would have at this time of year as the flower show was postponed. The Audit Committee (Pat Burgess, Mary Swift, and Ginger Clark) assisted Sandy with audit and everything balanced exactly. Out-of-town members should mail their dues to Sandy and she will mail them their yearbook pages. Other members who have yet to pay please contact Sandy.
Corresponding Secretary– Rebecca Garfield
A La Carte/Green Thumb Events–Sue Bleakie The Houston Botanic Center is opening on September 18. An attachment of upcoming events was mailed along with the notice of the September meeting.
Fleming Park Garden– Thank you Mary The Pollinator Garden looks absolutely beautiful. The City finally fixed a line of sprinklers along the rock wall along Dunstan which will give the garden more water.
SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB
OCTOBER 1, 2020 – Zoom Meeting
Program: Urban Beekeeping and Attracting Bees
Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis thanked everyone for attending and thanked Ann Hightower for organizing our Zoom meeting: She reminded members to let Ann know in advance if they have a guest so that Ann can admit them to our meeting.
Treasurer—Sandy Foor
Sandy reported that we have 30 paid members and 27 who have yet to pay. You can mail your check to Sandy or drop it off in her mailbox and she will get your yearbook insert to you. Our current balance is $7603.45.
Corresponding Secretary—Rebecca Garfield
Rebecca will send out a meeting notice with the Zoom link a week in advance and then later send a reminder.
Horticulture/Fleming Park—Mary Howe Hawkins/ Lee Tawse
The sprinklers in Fleming Park have been repaired. Mary needs to trim the Turk’s Cap; it’s growing over the park bench. The salvia is producing seedpods now. Feel free to pick some for your garden. She would like to get some milkweed for the pollinator garden but doesn’t like to buy it from nurseries because of their pesticide use.
Now is the time to plant Dutch iris bulbs and to divide day lilies and other bulbs. Do not plant snapdragons or pansies until Thanksgiving. Violas are a better choice than pansies for Houston. Mary plants sweet pea seeds from October through January to get blooms over a longer period of time. Remember that wind can take the water out of plants.
Federation—Joanne Storm
The Federation meeting October 9 at 10AM will be a hybrid. There will be an in-person meeting at the First Christian Church with physical distancing: no more than four people to a pew and they are using only every other pew. The presentation will be on table-top floral design. Phyllis will get an invitation to the virtual meeting which she’ll send on to the membership. They will hold a plant sale on Saturday October 10 at the church. Plants being donated for the sale can be dropped off Friday at the meeting or Saturday morning before 10AM. Carolynne said they had ordered the equipment for processing credit cards and hope to have it operational for the sale.
New Business:
Phyllis asked for volunteers for the Nominating Committee to nominate officers for next year. Ginger Clark, Lee Tawse, and Carmen Wright volunteered.
Program: ‘Urban Beekeeping and Attracting Bees’ Speaker: Monica Siwiak
SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB
Southampton Garden Club
Minutes of November 7, 2019 Meeting
President Lee Tawse thanked hostess Ann Hightower for opening her home for the meeting, and co-hostesses Barbara Clark, Ginger Clark and Sydney Jelinek for assisting.
Speaker for today was Dr. Todd Watson, a Texas Master Arborist and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Ecosystems Science and Management at Texas A&M University on the topic:
“Green Side Up: How to properly plant and care for young trees”
Next meeting will be a wreath workshop on December 5th at 11:15AM-1:45PM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Room 208 A&B, 6800 Buffalo Speedway. This workshop will be in place of the Christmas luncheon we’ve had in prior years. Basic supplies for wreath-making will be supplied by the Club but bring any special items you would like to include in your wreath. Food will be finger sandwiches, cookies and other easy items, and we will use disposable dishes for easy cleanup. Attendance is limited to 40 because of limited space. RSVP to Joanne King joanneking76@gmail.com
Visitors: Sandy Foor brought her new neighbor, Carmen Wright. It was Carmen’s second meeting.
Nomination Committee Chair Phyllis Carney reported that we still need two more volunteers: someone to be president and someone to chair the 2021 Flower Show. If no one volunteers to chair the show we might do a workshop or have horticulture only instead. No one has volunteered to be historian as of yet and the thought was we could dispense with that position. Carolynne White posts pictures and other relevant information to our website.
Social Committee Co-Chair Joanne King passed a signup sheet around for early signup to be a hostess or co-hostess for the 2020-2021 year. She will follow up later with Signup Genius.
Flower Show Update – Co-Chair Connie McMaken reported that the committee had a meeting at Beth Zdeblick’s house where the show will be held. They took pictures of all the placements and will be providing them at the February and March meetings. There will be no photography entries this year. The theme is Goddesses in the Garden. There will be a class featuring wreath designs. It was suggested to have a challenge category where every participant (or team) is given the same materials to work with.
Treasury Treasurer Sandy Foor reported that we have a balance of $6861.45. She has called all of last year’s members who had not yet paid but couldn’t reach Jill Satterwhite. The cut off date for paying dues is the December meeting.
Fleming Park Pollinator Garden - Mary Howe Howard - Planting Day
Excursions Co-Chair Rebecca Garfield passed a signup sheet around for the excursion to Centennial Gardens to be held November 21 10-11:20AM.
Federation News The next meeting will be Friday, November 8 at 10AM at the First Christian Church where a talk “Creating a Bird Friendly Community” will be presented and the Horticulture Specialty Show “Nature’s Kaleidoscope” will take place. The public is welcome to view the horticulture show from 12:30-2PM.
Tickets are on sale for the Dec 13th luncheon, “Holly Jolly Gala”. Tony Huffman, an Interior and Floral Artist, will be presenting the program. We provide a door or drawing prize. Lee Tawze was authorized to buy a book and Ginger Clark will deliver it.
Other Business Phyllis Carney nominated Kay Veech for Member Emeritus status. Kay has been a member of SHGC since 1975, serving in many positions on the board. The nomination was approved unanimously.
SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB
DECEMBER 3, 2020 – Zoom Meeting
Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis opened the meeting by thanking our would-be hostess Cecily Horton and co-hostesses Susan Bishop, Marcia Faschingbauer, Kate Hughes, Connie McMaken and Joanne King. She also thanked our Zoom hostess, Ann Hightower.
With the increased COVID numbers it was decided to continue meeting via Zoom for January (board meeting only), February and March, and to discuss the April Flower Show and May Luncheon possibilities later as we know more about the prevalence of COVID and the status of the vaccine rollout.
The November minutes were approved. Susan Broer and Cecily Horton volunteered to proof the December minutes.
Treasurer—Sandy Foor
Five members still have not paid their dues for this year. Please contact Sandy to pay dues and receive the yearbook. The current balance in the treasury is $8477.45
Fleming Park and horticulture—Mary Howe Hawkins
The Turk’s Cap needs to be cut back but Mary was afraid of frost. Members suggested that she wait until Valentine’s Day to trim it. The soil in the pollinator garden is good and the garden is covered by a layer of leaves. It was mulched in the summer and Mary will add mulch at the end of December. She’s added rain lilies from Beverly Wiemer’s garden but did not plant any bluebonnet seeds this year because there was no room for more plants. Beverly has more rain lily bulbs and narcissus bulbs she would be happy to share; contact her directly if you are interested. Mary mentioned that poinsettias do not like cold weather (<65F). Bring any poinsettias that are outside in during the cold weather. She recommended gurneys.com and k.vanbourgondien.com(dutchbulbs.com) for ordering seeds and bulbs respectively online.
Green Thumb—Sue Bleakie
Rebecca emailed the list of events that Sue provided to the membership.
Federation News—Carolynne White
Federation cancelled their Christmas gala because of Covid19 but is still selling poinsettias from Brookwood. The new Federation newsletter now has the correct email to order poinsettias; the poinsettias will be available December 10 at the First Christian Church for pickup. Federation is also collecting gift cards such as from Target or Walmart to give to the Star of Hope. The January meeting will be Zoom only and the subject will be chicken wrangling in the city.

Other business
Phyllis proposed that, weather permitting, we gather informally in Fleming Park next Thursday at 10:30AM.
The Federation website has some links to virtual garden tours and it was suggested that both Bayou Bend and Williamsburg would be good sites to check for other virtual tours.
SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB
February 4, 2021 – Zoom Meeting
Program: Texas Master Naturalist Ellen Morris
Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis Carney thanked our would-be hostess Mary Swift and co-hostesses Carolyn Corbett, Joanne Storm, and Lee Tawse.
There was no board meeting in January. The purpose of that meeting would have been to tell incoming board members about their jobs. Since we only had two changes — Amy Thomsen will be Program Chair and Carmen Wright will assist her, and Penny Nicholson will be parliamentarian — we decided to forego a Zoom meeting.
The March meeting will be via Zoom. We are hoping that to return to holding meetings in members’ homes next year. We will need volunteers for next year’s meetings.
Former member Nan Brown is in hospice. Her address for those who would like to send her a card is:
Nan Brown

Membership--Analisa Frazier
Former SGC member Anne Gorman was the guest of Phyllis Carney.
Recording secretary--Ginger Clark
The December minutes had been proofed and sent to Carolynne for posting on the website and the minutes were approved. Susan Broer and Mary Swift volunteered to proof the February minutes.
Federation--Carolynne White
Federation will meet on Zoom and not in person for the next meetings. The February meeting will feature a program by Houston Designing Women (SGC members Joanne Storm, Phyllis Carney and Susan Baiamonte are members of Designing Women.) There will be a workshop after the March meeting at around 11:30AM on leaf manipulation and the like for designs. Participants need to sign up in advance and pay a $10 workshop fee (fee to be paid in advance). They will then get a list of the materials they will need for the workshop. The March program will be on underutilized plants adaptable to Houston gardens. A New Officers Workshop will be held after the April meeting
Treasurer--Sandy Foor
We currently have 59 members. We lost two: Sultana Kaldis and Gail Viele, because they moved. The balance in the Treasury is $9117.75. This year we have so far made donations to the following organizations:
$100 Garden Club for Tots
$250 Houston Food Bank
$50 Poinsettia Fund
Other donations proposed for 2021 are:
$100 Friends of Fleming Park
$50 Texas Garden Club Seeds for Life
$10 Texas Garden Club President’s Book
$100 Friends of Sunset Esplanade
$475 Texas Garden Club dues ($8 per member)
$250 Houston Food Bank (additional donation)
$250 Meals on Wheels
All additional donations were approved. A motion was made and approved to increase funding for the Pollinator Garden to an as needed basis.
Flower Show—Joanne Storm
We will have a digital flower show on April 1 at 10 AM. The title of the show is “Blooms to Zoom”. There will be three categories, all NGC design types. Choose one category and send a digital picture of your design to Joanne Storm by March 22. The picture will need to be taken with a plain background. Heather White will discuss each design. Ann Hightower said that the Zoom meeting could be recorded and put on the website afterwards. Phyllis will send detailed instructions after Heather White has reviewed them. We also need a Flower Show chair for 2022.
Pollinator Garden—Mary Howe Hawkins
A month ago a wheeled vehicle sliced through the Pollinator Garden and seriously damaged it. The water spigot near the garden is broken. Mary can’t do a spring cleanup until the spigot is repaired.

Welcome and announcements—Phyllis Carney
Phyllis thanked everyone for attending and thanked our Zoom hostess, Ann Hightower, our volunteer March hostess, Lee Tawse, and co-hostesses Mary Hawkins, Trienet del Valle and Lorene Williams. Ann has done a marvelous job as Zoom hostess this year enabling us to meet digitally in spite of Covid 19.
And very sad news: Sharon Erskine’s husband passed away.
Membership—
Anne Gorman was Phyllis’ guest. It was her second meeting. She was in the club in the 90s when she lived on Albans and is now on Quenby in Sultana Kaldis’ old house.
Recording Secretary—Ginger Clark
The February minutes were approved and have been posted to the website. Carolynne White and Alex Tyson volunteered to proof the March minutes
Treasurer—Sandy Foor
We have a balance of $9117.45 and a total of 61 members. Two checks have not yet cleared, one for $250 to Meals on Wheels and the other for $250 to the Houston Food bank. When they clear the balance will be $8617.45. At the end of March Mary Hawkins will have receipts for new plants, compost and a new hose for the Pollinator Garden.
Social Committee—Alex Tyson
We are asking the hostesses from last year sign up for next year. Alex suggested having the May luncheon outside at the Raven this year. Members on the Zoom meeting were enthusiastic about the idea. We will survey the membership to see who would be interested. Alex worked previously with Nan Brown as social chair and remembered her as the kindest person and so wonderful to work with and wanted to give a tribute to her.
Flower Show 2022
We need a Chairperson(s).
Federation—Carolynne White/Joanne Storm
The next meeting will be March 12. Adam Black will discuss underutilized plants adaptable to the Houston area. There will be a workshop on leaf manipulation after the meeting. It costs $10, and you need to register in advance. Contact Mary Vacek at 936-689-0328. Carolynne will send Phyllis the announcement with Mary’s full contact information which Rebecca will send to club members. Carolynne is putting together for Federation a compilation of plants hat survived the freeze. If you have any please send pictures to Carolynne and describe what you did to protect them.
A workshop for new officers will be held after the April 9 Federation meeting. The workshop is very helpful for new officers. Please try to attend; it’s easier this year with Zoom.
Horticulture/Fleming Park—Mary Howe Hawkins
We still don’t have water for the Pollinator Garden. Mary plans to schedule a work day in mid-March when it will be safe to cut back woody plants. She will call Darren Mast, the president of Friends of Fleming Park and give him the date so we can get water by then. Blue Water is the company that handles the sprinklers. Mary will also need to buy a new hose. Mary thanked Phyllis for cleaning out the garden. The lantana is coming back, the Turk’s Cap needed to be cut back anyways and it will survive. The Esperanza and the rest of the foundation plantings will also survive. We do need to replant the mist flower and other plants that didn’t survive. We also need to get more compost. Bering’s has Nature’s Way compost on sale now.
An opinion piece in Chronicle suggested considering native plants when replanting gardens devastated by the freeze.
Mary sent out an email outlining post-freeze care. Clear out mush, but don’t cut back woody perennials yet. For information on roses consult www.houstonrose.org.
Frost cloth can be obtained from Southwest Fertilizer, Cornelius and Garden Supply.
Yearbook—Janet Kohlhase
Janet would like to dedicate this year’s Yearbook to Nan Brown. Sandy
Foor volunteered to write a tribute to Nan for inclusion in the Yearbook. Her husband, Bill, will have a celebration of her life after Covid 19 passes, probably at either the Houston or River Oaks Country Clubs.
April 1 Meeting “Blooms to Zoom”—Joanne Storm
There will be no regular meeting on April 1. We will go directly to “Blooms to Zoom” which will show slides of each submitted design. You will be able to talk about your design and Heather White will critique each design. Send your pictures to Joanne by March 22. Include your name and the design type you’ve chosen plus the names of the plant material used. The background needs to be the same color as the underlay. Send the photo in large format (largest number of pixels possible) so that it will look good when enlarged. You can only submit one design. You can work in pairs, but each pair can only submit one design.

We now have water and a new hose. We put compost in, but not too much so that plants can reseed. The garden is making an excellent recovery from the February freeze. Mary especially wanted to thank super volunteers Phyllis and Adrienne Stokes.
September Meeting
Since the first Thursday is before Labor Day we voted to change it to the second Thursday.
Awards
SGC received third place in District IV for our President’s Report and second place for our Website. Phyllis sent in applications for Yearbook and for the Flower Show Schedule even though we did not get to have the Flower Show. The Schedule received second place. We will not be able to submit it for consideration next year.
Officers—New and Old
Phyllis then thanked the out-going officers and handed a rose to each one. She gave special thanks to Ann Hightower for all her encouragement to have meetings via Zoom and for having done such a fabulous job as Zoom hostess. She also thanked outgoing Parliamentarian, Sherrie Glass, for all the years she has served as our Parliamentarian.
The new officer installation “Cupcake” was done by Corrie Ten-Have. Corrie had a charming verse to accompany the introduction of the new officers who each received a very special “Margarita Cupcake” from Corrie.
Have a great summer.
