SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES

Lee thanked Julie Baker for opening her home, and Marcia Randall, Edie Archer and Joanne Storm for hosting.

The next meeting will be at Ann Hightower’s with Barbara Clark, Virginia Clark and Sydney Jelinek hosting.

Jill Oliver, Lead Garden Consultant for Rooted Garden, presented the program for the month: “How to Salad Garden, 4 Steps to Grow your Own”.

  • Mary Swift and Sydney Jelinek volunteered to proof the minutes.
  • Phyllis Carney, Alex Tyson and Sydney Jelinek volunteered to serve on the Nominating Committee. Lee will email all current officers to ask if they are willing to serve again next year.
  • Mary Swift presented Katie Hughes who was attending her third meeting for membership. Phyllis made the motion to approve membership; Sandy seconded it and Katie was voted in.
  • Sandy Foor introduced her new next-door neighbor Carmen Wright.
  • Excursions--Rebecca announced the excursion tomorrow to the Plant and Bulb Mart. There’s a lecture at 9:00 am at St John the Divine. Followed by lunch at Local Foods, arriving between 11 and 11:30AM. A guided tour of Centennial Gardens is planned on November 21(note date change) from 10-11:30AM. The club voted to pay the $250 honorarium from the club treasury.
  • Dues and Yearbook reminder. Sandy wants to remind all members who have not yet paid their dues to please do so as soon as possible. The new yearbook insert is available for all paid-up members. An additional page of photos from last year’s flower show was handed out for inclusion in the yearbook. Please get any new address information to Maggie Dalthorp so that membership information can be kept up to date. New members should provide their addresses to Julie Baker and Analisa Frazier.
  • Flower Show Update. Sarah reported that an organizing meeting of the committee will be held this Sunday to decide on placements for arrangements and photography. The theme will be “Goddesses in the Garden”, mythological Greek and Roman goddesses that is. In keeping with the theme there will be sections for cornucopias and wreaths. The show will be held April 2 at Beth Zdeblick’s house 2132 Rice Blvd
  • Status of New Rules Committee—work is in progress.
  • Joanne Storm - Federation Report – Horticulture Specialty Show “Nature’s Kaleidoscope” will be held on Nov. 8 at FCC, public hours 12-2. The next talk will be on Native Plants for Shade
  • Joanne King-Social Committee—This year we are having a holiday wreath making workshop instead of the Christmas luncheon. It will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church (corner of Buffalo Speedway and Holcombe). Space is limited to 40 participants. Julie will send an invitation towards the end of October. If space is still available at the time of the November meeting, additional participants can sign up then. Since it won’t be a luncheon we probably won’t need all of the co-hostesses who’ve volunteered.
  • Other Events of Interest—“Taking Root” Annual Luncheon benefiting Peckerwood Garden Conservation Foundation on Tuesday October 22 at the Junior League. Sarah Balinskas is going if anyone wants to sit at a table with her. Jeff Lowenfels will be presenting “Teaming with Microbes” November 7 5:00PM to 7:30PM at the United Way, 50 Waugh Drive.

SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES

President Lee Tawse thanked hostess Ann Hightower for opening her home for the meeting, and co-hostesses Barbara Clark, Ginger Clark and Sydney Jelinek for assisting.

Speaker for today was Dr. Todd Watson, a Texas Master Arborist and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Ecosystems Science and Management at Texas A&M University on the topic:

“Green Side Up:  How to properly plant and care for young trees”

Next meeting will be a wreath workshop on December 5th at 11:15AM-1:45PM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Room 208 A&B, 6800 Buffalo Speedway.  This workshop will be in place of the Christmas luncheon we’ve had in prior years.  Basic supplies for wreath-making will be supplied by the Club but bring any special items you would like to include in your wreath.  Food will be finger sandwiches, cookies and other easy items, and we will use disposable dishes for easy cleanup.  Attendance is limited to 40 because of limited space.  RSVP to Joanne King joanneking76@gmail.com

Visitors:  Sandy Foor brought her new neighbor, Carmen Wright.  It was Carmen’s second meeting.

Nomination Committee  Chair Phyllis Carney reported that we still need two more volunteers: someone to be president and someone to chair the 2021 Flower Show.  If no one volunteers to chair the show we might do a workshop or have horticulture only instead.  No one has volunteered to be historian as of yet and the thought was we could dispense with that position.  Carolynne White posts pictures and other relevant information to our website.

Social Committee  Co-Chair Joanne King passed a signup sheet around for early signup to be a hostess or co-hostess for the 2020-2021 year.  She will follow up later with Signup Genius.

Flower Show Update – Co-Chair Connie McMaken reported that the committee had a meeting at Beth Zdeblick’s house where the show will be held.  They took pictures of all the placements and will be providing them at the February and March meetings.  There will be no photography entries this year.  The theme is Goddesses in the Garden.  There will be a class featuring wreath designs.  It was suggested to have a challenge category where every participant (or team) is given the same materials to work with.

Treasury  Treasurer Sandy Foor reported that we have a balance of $6861.45.  She has called all of last year’s members who had not yet paid but couldn’t reach Jill Satterwhite.  The cut off date for paying dues is the December meeting.

Fleming Park Pollinator Garden - Mary Howe Howard - Planting Day

Excursions Co-Chair Rebecca Garfield passed a signup sheet around for the excursion to Centennial Gardens to be held November 21 10-11:20AM.

Federation News  The next meeting will be Friday, November 8 at 10AM at the First Christian Church where a talk “Creating a Bird Friendly Community” will be presented and the Horticulture Specialty Show “Nature’s Kaleidoscope” will take place.  The public is welcome to view the horticulture show from 12:30-2PM.

Tickets are on sale for the Dec 13th luncheon, “Holly Jolly Gala”.  Tony Huffman, an Interior and Floral Artist, will be presenting the program.  We provide a door or drawing prize.  Lee Tawze was authorized to buy a book and Ginger Clark will deliver it.

Other Business  Phyllis Carney nominated Kay Veech for Member Emeritus status.  Kay has been a member of SHGC since 1975, serving in many positions on the board.  The nomination was approved unanimously.

Southampton Garden Club

Minutes December 5, 2019

Lee thanked to Sandy and Joanne for arranging the room at St. Vincent de Paul, and thanked the co-hostesses:  Sarah Balinskas, Connie McMaken Mary Bradshaw, Alex Tyson, Sandy Foor and Trienet del Valle for providing the refreshments.

Our next meeting will be our board meeting at 11AM on January 16th, instead of January 9th the originally scheduled date.  The meeting will be held at Ginger Clark’s home, 1828 Dunstan.  Lee will be sending out an email.

Our workshop on building holiday wreaths was led by Shundra Anderson from Anderson Atelier, shundraanderson.wixsite.com

An abbreviated meeting was held before the workshop began.

It was Carmen Wright’s third visit.  Mary Swift moved to nominate Carmen for membership, Ginger Clark seconded and Carmen was unanimously welcomed into the club as our newest member.

As members of Federation Zone 1, we are responsible for providing food, either tea sandwiches or cookies, for the January 10th meeting.  Ginger Clark and Sherrie Glass volunteered to provide them.

The Federation “Holly Jolly” Christmas Gala is December 13th at FCC, tickets are required, call Mary Jan Moore at 512-547-0365 for availability.

Please see or email Lee Tawse if you have any issues you would like the board to address in January.

January 19, 2020

Minutes SHGC Board Meeting

Lee thanked hostess Ginger Clark and Analisa, Cecily and Lee for co-hostessing.

The next meeting will be at Mary Swift’s home with Carolyn Corbett, Tonya Judah and Joanne King co-hostessing.

We still need to fill the positions of Flower Show Chairs and of Excursion Chairs for 2020/2021.  At the February meeting we will need to vote in the new board members.  We couldn’t take that vote in December, the usual time, because of the workshop.  We will also need to vote whether next year’s Flower Show should be judged.

Emeritus members:  Kay Veech was previously awarded emeritus status.  Kay would like to attend Garden Club meetings but can’t negotiate stairs so we’d like to inform her when venues will be accessible without climbing stairs.  The requirement for emeritus status is a minimum of 20 years membership in the club.  Susan Broer, a member since 1992 who has moved to Austin, has requested emeritus status.  Connie McMaken motioned that it be granted, Phyllis Carney seconded and the board so approved.

The March Federation meeting typically offers a new officer workshop after their regular meeting.  New board members are encouraged to attend.  Phyllis will check on the details and make an announcement.

Analisa Frazier, Membership Chair, requested that when members sign their guests in that they also add the names of the two co-sponsors so that she knows who they will be.  Each proposed new member must attend three meetings and receive three letters of recommendation, one from their sponsor and one each from their co-sponsors to be voted in.  Janet Kohlhase, archivist, has been scanning the letters for digital storage.  Since we no longer keep a scrapbook, the position of archivist will be discontinued next year.  Ginger Clark, recording secretary, volunteered to take over the task of scanning the letters and will consult with Janet and Carolynne White, WebMaster on their storage.  She will also talk to Carolynne about helping with the website.

Sandy Foor, Treasurer, reported that we have $7891.39 in the treasury as of 12/31/19 although there is about $500 in outstanding bills.  There was some discussion about reducing the dues, but it was decided to keep them at the same level.

Sarah Balinskas, Connie McMaken and Marcia Fashingbauer, Flower Show Chairs, visited Beth Zdeblick’s where the Show will be held in April, took measurements and photos of potential placements and will have them available at February’s meeting.  Placements will be in the living room, dining room, family room and library.  Marsha has found servers, La Dolce Notte, to replace Tommie and Gilbert, our longtime servers who have retired.

Lorene Williams, Social Committee Chair, reported that Adrienne Stokes has sent the Sign Up Genius for 2020/2021 hostesses and co-hostesses to the membership.  The issue of how to encourage new members to sign up was discussed.  Making it obligatory was considered too harsh.  A committee, Sherry Glass, Lorene Williams, Beverly Wiemer, Adrienne Stokes, and Sandy Foor that had been established previously will meet to discuss the issue and report back at the February meeting.  Cecily Horton asked if meetings could be held outside of Southampton.  The answer was yes.

Mary Hawkins, Fleming Park Chair, requested addition money to add seasonal color to the pollinator garden.  Her request was enthusiastically approved.

February 2020

Minutes Southampton Garden Club

February 6, 2020

Lee Tawse thanked Mary Swift for hosting our meeting and Carolyn Corbett, Tonya Judah and Joanne King for co-hostessing. Our next meeting will be March 5th at Sarah Balinskas home with Susan Bishop, Carolynne White and Caroline Ellsworth co-hostessing.

Joanne King, Social Committee, sent around a signup sheet for food for the party to be held the evening of the Flower Show, April 2.We’d like to have predominantly savory dishes with desserts kept to a total of four. Alex Tyson asked whether the Club would provide a main dish as we did last year. The answer is probably yes.

Connie McMaken and Phyllis Carney volunteered to approve the minutes.

We had two visitors. Jonny Almoney was the guest of Joanne Storm and Amy Thompson with the guest of Sarah Balinskas.

2020/2021 Board Members: (see page 3) were introduced. A motion was made by Phyllis Carney and seconded by Connie McMaken to approve the slate which passed. As a Flower Show chair for 2021 could not be recruited it was proposed that we have an unjudged show. Marcia Faschingbauer made the motion and no one opposed it. Lorene Williams suggested that Jonni Almoney critique the designs so we could learn from the experience. Jonni reminded us that she is not an NGC Flower Show judge. Sherrie Glass suggested having some extra flowers available to play with the designs. Phyllis Carney, incoming President, nominated Joanne Storm to be the chairperson of the unjudged 2021 Flower Show which was approved with no objections. Phyllis announced that there would be an officer’s workshop after the April 10th Federation meeting and asked all officers for 2020-2021 to attend.

2020 Flower Show: Sarah Balinskas, dressed in toga with laurel wreath on her head, along with fellow co-chairs Connie McMaken and Marcia Faschingbauer, reported on the progress of this year’s show, “Goddesses in the Garden”. There are four categories: cornucopias, wreaths, swags, and a challenge. They had the placements cards with pictures of the sites in Beth Zbedlick’s house available to sign up for the show. There will be a chance to preview the sites before the show. Marcia explained that the challenge will consist of two people teams, perhaps a novice paired with an experienced designer. Each team will receive the same material probably the Saturday before the show and they can use any or all of the material provided. She had a picture of the container—a small urn of classical design. The following table lists the volunteers for the various positions at the Flower Show:

Treasurer: Sandy Foor reported that we have a balance of $7781.46

Fleming Park: Mary Hawkins is hoping that we’ve had our last cold snap. If it’s not raining, she’s planning a work day at the pollinator garden Thursday or Friday of next week and asked for volunteers to help. She’s talked to Darren Mast, the chair of Fleming Park, about the Park paying for mulch and amendments on the lawn bed and on the rosemary bed at the street corner.

Federation Meeting: February 14th at FCC. The program will be presented by Regina Williamson “Conditioning flowers and specimens for flower shows.” The Annual Valentine’s Day Tea will follow directly after the meeting at 1:30PM. Tickets are $30; please call Sarah Bentley at 713-776-3846.

Minutes Southampton Garden Club

March 5, 2020

Lee thanked our hostess Sarah Balinskas for opening her home and garden for today’s meeting and also thanked co-hostesses Susan Bishop Carolynne White and Caroline Ellsworth.

The next meeting was to be our Flower Show Goddesses in the Garden at Beth Zdeblik’s home at 2132 Rice Blvd.  Due to the Covid 19 outbreak the Flower Show had been postponed to April 2021.

Membership:  It was Amy Thomsen’s third visit.  Connie McMaken made a motion to vote her into the club and Ginger Clark seconded it.  Amy was welcomed into the club.

Memorial Services for Charles Burgess will be held on Saturday March 7 at Covenant Church 4949 Caroline St.

Social Committee:  Lorene Williams passed around signup sheets for co-hosting in 2021.

Treasurer:  Sandy Foor reported a balance of $6773.46.  Sandy remarked that the expense reimbursement form is on our website and requested that members get the club EIN (Employer Identification Number) in order to avoid paying sales tax.  The club cannot reimburse sales tax payments as that would endanger our non-profit status.

The Texas Garden Clubs Emergency Fund asked for a donation of $100 which will be recognized by a brick in their garden.  Adrienne Stokes made a motion to approve the donation and Tonya Juda seconded it.  The motion was approved.

Federation:  The next meeting will be held on March 13 and 10:30AM at the First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Blvd.  Program:  “Under Construction” an architectural approach to table tops.  Workshop:  Leaf manipulation.  Materials provided.

The following month on April 10th the program will be “Exciting Underutilized Plants Adaptable to the Houston Region” followed by the Officer’s Workshop at the FCC 1601 Sunset Blvd.

May 11, 2020 Board Of Directors Zoom Meeting

May 11, 2020

Thank you to all that could make it to our Zoom meeting and special thanks
to Ann Hightower for organizing this new way to meet while social
distancing.
We did clarify that the scheduled May picnic at Fleming Park on May 28th is
100% tentative based on Covid-19 restrictions at that time.
We decided to proceed with our planning for the coming year for a normal
schedule and, if need be, to have our meetings via Zoom or some other
similar media.  This is to be decided monthly with all national and city
recommendations for safety to be followed.  We had 3 members volunteer to
form our "Zoom team" and to seek help from Janet Kohlhase.  We will aim to
have power point presentations the first few meetings in the fall as those
would be easier with a Zoom-type meeting and have the floral design
programs in Feb and March, just before Flower Show in the hope of having a
traditional, in home meeting at that time.
A total budget for programs was discussed of $750 for the year.  Potential
programs discussed were 1)  Beehive Rescue, 2) Plant propagation,
3)Houston Botanical Garden, 4) Willow Waterhole Conservation Area or
similar, 5) Houston Audubon as well as 2 floral design programs.  Five
programs total for the year.

We also discussed potential themes and decided on "Beauty Endures"
Janet Kohlhase did not get the password in time to join the meeting but
wanted everyone to know about the Yearbook deadlines, etc. as follows:
Yearbook 2020-21 (Janet Kohlhase)

So far I have received over 30 photos from 10 members. Many thanks!
The deadline for flower photos is July 1, 2020. Please send a maximum of 4
high resolution photos of your Southampton garden to my gmail address:
jek3799@gmail.com.  Note that I rarely use my gmail account, so please use
janetkohlhase@sbcglobal.net for general garden club correspondence.

The deadline for other changes to the membership list is July 1, 2020.  If
there are new members, I need their contact information and a head-shot
photo (high resolution preferred) by July 1, 2020.  Again please send photo
attachment to my gmail account, jek3799@gmail.com.

I've attached a photo of the pink angel trumpet that was blooming last week
along my Ashby fence.  In about 5 days I picked up almost 300 spent
blooms.  Cuttings available if interested.  free of course, just let me know
and I'll put one in a bottle to root for you. - Phyllis

May 28, 2020 "Spring Luncheon in the Park" Meeting

May 28, 2020

Southampton Garden Club

Spring Luncheon May 28, 2020 – 11am

Lee thanked Phyllis Carney for organizing and hosting the Fleming Park Picnic lunch. Thanks to co-hostess Ginger Clark.

Since we were in the park without nametags, everyone introduced themselves to new member Amy Thomson.

Lee announced Kay and Clark Martin’s daughter Stephanie passed away last Thursday. Her memorial will be held in September and information about contributions to her favorite charities is available in her obituary, sent out to our members.  SHGC sent flowers to the family. Please reach out to Kay during this difficult time.

Mary Swift and Phyllis Carney volunteered to proof the minutes.

Our Board Meeting was held May 11 by Zoom and the minutes are posted on our website. We discussed at length how we will structure next year’s events.  As of now it looks like we will be meeting via Zoom.  Even the churches we’ve used in the past are not renting rooms.  Our Zoom team is composed of Ann Hightower, Beth Zdeblick, Janet Kohlhase and Julie Baker.  Julie and Beth were going to be the excursion committee next year but since excursions don’t seem likely they will be helping with Zoom.

Yearbook – Janet Kohlhase requests your jpeg photos of your gardens be sent to her by July 1.  She plans to put four pictures per page and the pictures should have a resolution of 300 dpi or greater to look good printed.  Please send to this email address:  jek3799@gmail.com.  It can accept larger attachments.

Flower Show delayed until 2021 – co-chairs will be Connie McMaken and Marcia Fashingbauer

Treasurer – Sandy Foor needs your receipts handed in ASAP.  Ginger and Barbara Clark and Mary Swift volunteered to audit the books this summer.  There is a balance of $5667.74 as of May 28, 2020.

Fleming Park Pollinator Garden – Mary Howe Hawkins will be coordinating workdays; you are encouraged to water should you walk by and notice it is droopy.
