SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES
September 6, 2018
Welcome – President Joanne King called the meeting to order. She thanked co-hostesses: Susan Baiamonte, Rebecca Garfield and Janet Kohlhase.
The club board meeting was changed to May to ensure that everything would be in place for the June 15th yearbook deadline.
Carolynne White moved to continue to post the minutes to the club website but to discontinue emailing them to all of the members. The motion was seconded and approved.
Corresponding secretary - Julie Baker will send out paperless post invitations for the December and May luncheons, the March workshop and the April Flower Show two weeks prior to the event as a head count is needed for these events. An email will be sent for all other club meetings.
Treasurer - Sandy Foor is working on a budget and requests that receipts and expense forms (form is available on the website) be submitted even if you do not wish to be reimbursed. She needs this information to get an accurate picture of how much money will be spent.
The balance is $4241.14.
Dues are $80.
The audit committee, Janet Kohlhase, Barbara Clark and Ginger Clark met with Sandy last week and everything checked out perfectly.
Donation recommendations were approved with a change in the amount for the HFGC Christmas donation from $54 to a range between $54 and $75 dollars.
Membership Report – Analisa Frazier. We have 62 members. Penny Nicholson brought her daughter, Sara Powell visiting from Albuquerque as a guest. Please email Analisa Frazier with any changes to your contact information.
Yearbook - Thank you to Joanne Storm for the beautiful new yearbook format! The yearbook cover can be reused and we will only have to replace the pages in following years. Yearbooks were handed out to members as they paid their dues. Joanne took orders for the Federation’s Vision of Beauty calendar/day books. They cost $8 and contain 60 beautiful floral designs. We will make a small amount of money from each copy sold. She will also take orders at the October meeting and the books will be distributed at the November meeting.
Federation News – Joanne Storm. The HFGC has moved. They will have their meetings at the First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Blvd. Meetings are held on the second Friday of every month. The September meeting, to be held on the 14th at 10AM, will feature environmental lawyer and Rice faculty member Jim Blackburn. Their flower show featuring a Halloween theme will be held on October 12. The bulb mart will be held at St. John the Divine church that same weekend, October 12-13.
Programs – Tonya and Joanne Storm suggested an excursion to the October 12 flower show. We’d meet in the lobby at 3PM. Our March program will be a hands-on workshop at the Metropolitan Multiservice Center on West Gray.
Social Committee – Trienet de Valle and Adrienne Stokes. Sign Up Genius worked beautifully and everything is covered for the coming year.
Flower Show –Sarah Balinskas, Sandy Foor and Lee Tawse. Please think about doing a design. We need 16 people to make a small flower show. The show will be held April 4 at Ginger Clark’s house 1828 Dunstan. Lee is asking for volunteers and has a signup sheet for volunteers. Clerks will work for 2-3 hours. Sandy is doing the schedule. There will be four categories one of which will be “under water”.
Web Site – Carolynne White. Many thanks are due to Carolynne for putting a lot of work into the site this summer. Our prior site has been hacked so security needed to be improved and many things were up for renewal. Staying with the same option and increasing security meant a cost of over $200/year. Carolynne switched to Word Press for $473 for a five year contract. Additionally they will clean up any problems if the site is hacked. The password remains “posies”. Please notify Carolynne if anything doesn’t work or if you have suggestions. She will add anything we get from presenters (including her presentation for this meeting) under programs. She gave a demonstration of the site after presenting her program.
Archivist – Janet Kohlhase. Janet is collecting old yearbooks and flower show schedules and scanning them. We will have space on the website for them.
Fleming Park Garden – Mary Hawkins. The garden is blooming nicely. There was a small problem with one area not getting enough water from the sprinklers but recent rains have helped.
Horticulture – Planning your Garden for Fall & Winter, Speaker: Carolynne White
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Virginia Clark
Recording Secretary

Horticulture – Carolynne White
It’s time to prune roses and to very gently tip prune crape myrtles. Do not prune any plant that flowers in the spring; you’ll remove the buds. Plants may have some scale. Sometimes you can just wash it off. If that doesn’t work, Neem oil can be applied. Daffodils exude a sap from cut ends that can damage other cut flowers. If you are going to mix daffodils with other flowers, seal off the daffodil ends first
Excursions Chair – Tonya Judah

Horticulture – Carolynne White, Carolynne coordinated the plant swap held in conjunction with the luncheon. Carolynne had a few tips: if you’re going to plant daylilies there are varieties that do much better here than others. Check with a daylily group, there are several locally, or Carolynne to make sure the variety you want to plant is one that will thrive here. She also recommended that you take pictures of your bulb foliage so that you’ll know next fall where they are planted, and to cut lawns at a higher length because it’s getting hot. Texas A&M has a site https://texassuperstar.com/ for plants that do well here.
