The Club voted to keep the same contributions for this year, with some flexibility in spending on the Pollinator Garden & book for Christmas donation at the HFGC Christmas luncheon. Tonya Judah suggested getting a book signed (for use as Christmas luncheon donation) on the upcoming Club excursion to Bayou Bend.

SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES
October 6, 2016

President Carolynne White called the meeting to order and thanked Hostess Adrienne Stokes and Co-Hostesses Marcia Faschingbauer, Edie Archer, and Trienet del Valle. Carolynne welcomed our guests. She reminded members and guests that her theme for the year is a continuation of last year’s, “Through Flowers and Gardens our Friendships Grow.” Carolynne asked for officer reports.

Following our new procedure, the September minutes were approved by the review committee and have been distributed by email. Please let Carolynne know if you have additional corrections or additions.

Second VP/Membership--Carolyn Corbett: Carolyn asked that we consider membership for 3 guests who have attended the three required meetings, have the required recommendation letters and are standing for a vote on their admission to the club. They are Ann Hightower and Karel Cromie, guests of Carolynne White, and Barbara Clark, guest of Susan Broer. Votes were taken and our new members were welcomed by unanimous votes. New members were asked to provide their contact information so it can be added to our website. We also welcomed first-time guest, Rebecca Powell Garfield, sponsored by Carolynne White, and Ginger Clark, Barbara Clark’s sister and guest of Bev Wiemer.

Third VP/Yearbook—Janet Kohlhase: Carolynne thanked Janet for our beautiful 2016-2017 directory.

The title is “A Floral Ballet.” Horticulture, floral design and photography classes will be included. Placement cards will be ready in December. There are several leadership positions for which we still need volunteers. Please contact Phyllis Carney or Joann King if you are willing to volunteer for one of these important positions. It is important that we all do our part to make the Flower Show a reality.

Treasurer—Adrienne Stokes: 2016-2017 dues of $75.00 are currently due.

Horticulture—Lorene Williams: Sod webworms are a real problem this year and we should all be on the alert for these pests. Not only do they attack our yards, they can get into the house. To learn more about sod webworms, access the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service at harrisagrilife.org.

Horticulture Announcements—Marsha Faschingbauer graciously brought some Agapanthus stalks, which you are welcome to take for use in your floral designs. These are lovely when painted. Missy Allen is giving away Birds of Paradise plants. Please call her if you would like some for your yard. And, should you have need of someone to remove bees, contact Karel Cromie who will contact her son, Rob Cromie.

Workshops/Excursion Chair—Cyril Hosley: Tonya Judah, our excursion chair, was absent due to her mother-in-law’s stroke. In her absence, Cyril reminded members of our fall excursion to Bayou Bend Gardens on October 27 at 10:00 a.m., where Gardens Curator Bart Brechter will give us a private tour. Cyril reminded members to be prompt as a Bayou Bend tour always starts on time! A sign-up sheet was passed around for members to indicate their interest in attending. The tour will be followed by a Dutch-treat lunch at a local restaurant. Tonya will provide exact details in an email she will send out the week before our tour. The tour will take place rain or shine.

A La Carte/Green Thumb Events—Edie Archer presented members with fun things to do in Houston in October. Those included Peckerwood Gardens, River Oaks Garden Club Pink Elephant Sale, Park to Port Bike Ride, Native Plant Society Meeting, Sip and Stroll at Bayou Bend, and the Annual Bulb Mart with bulbs good for growing in Houston.

Soni Holladay from Texas A&M University presented a program on Gardening for Butterflies in Houston.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Cyril Hosley, Recording Secretary

November, 2016

SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES
November 3, 2016

President Carolynne White called the meeting to order and thanked Hostess Susan Broer and Co-Hostesses Susan Baiamonte, Pat Sommer, and Caroline Ellsworth-Rucker. Carolynne welcomed our guests and asked for officer reports.

Per our new procedure, the October minutes were approved by the review committee and have been distributed by email. Please let Carolynne know if you have any corrections or additions.

Nominating Committee for the 2017-18 Executive Board: According to our By-Laws, this committee should have been constituted in October. Per the by-laws, the club president appoints one committee member from the current Executive Board and the Chairman. Janet Kohlhase will serve in that capacity. Two members are needed from the general membership. Julie Baker and Gail Viele volunteered. Because of scheduling conflicts, Gail is unable to participate. Carolyn Corbett graciously agreed to serve in her place.

Second VP/Membership--Carolyn Corbett: Carolyn asked that we welcome guest Rebecca Powell Garfield, sponsored by Carolynne White, to her second meeting. She also introduced Analisa Frazier, guest of Alex Tyson.

Carolyn asked that we consider membership for 2 guests who have attended the three required meetings, have the required recommendation letters and are standing for a vote on their admission to the club. They are Lee Tawes, guest of Sandy Foor, and Ginger Clark, guest of Bev Wiemer. Votes were taken individually on each applicant and our new members were welcomed by unanimous votes. New members were asked to provide their contact information so it can be added to our website. They were also reminded to pay their dues to the treasurer.

2016 Flower Show—Chairman Janet Kohlhase: After the Flower Show, the committee realized there was one other award that should have been presented. Today, Patricia Sommer was presented the SGC Special Award for her blue ribbon novice design.

Fourth VP/Flower Show—Chairman Phyllis Carney: The committee still has decisions to make and will have more information to give club members at the December meeting. Sign-up information will be available in December and will also be placed on the website. Phyllis reminded us that the name of the show is “A Floral Ballet” and that we will have design, horticulture and photo competitions.

Website—Carolynne White: Carolynne informed the membership that officer job descriptions are now listed in the “Officers & Committees” section of the website and will soon be removed from the “Members Only” page. That restructuring should make it easier for members to know what is expected of each position on the Executive Board. Because the minutes contain valuable information for members, each month’s minutes for this club year will be posted under a section called “Minutes.” This will be in an area that is Password protected.

Treasurer—Adrienne Stokes: 2016-2017 dues of $75.00 are currently due. Bank balance is $5440.67.

Workshops/Excursion—Tonya Judah, our excursion chair, was absent due to her mother-in-law’s death. In her absence, Carolynne complimented both Tonya and Cyril for the wonderful excursion to Bayou Bend last Thursday. We had 23 members and guests attend. Bart Brechter, Garden Curator, gave us an amazing tour. Carolynne suggested that we might want to do something nice for him.

Cyril Hosley made a motion that we give an honorarium to Bart Brechter as a thank you for the private tour he gave our club on October 27. The motioned was seconded. During discussion, Cecily Horton stated she thought the amount of the honorarium should be $250 due to Bart’s stature within the Horticultural world. She felt this was an incredible opportunity for us and our honorarium should reflect our appreciation. Cecily amended the original motion adding the amount. The motion passed unanimously.

A thank you card was passed around for those who took the tour to sign. Cyril Hosley will mail the card, a note and the check to Bart at Bayou Bend.

A La Carte/Green Thumb Events—Edie Archer presented members with fun things to do in Houston in November. Those included the Herb Fair on November 5; Zoo Lights, November 18 through January 14; Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens in Galveston, November 14-January 10; the Second Saturday Boat Ride on Buffalo Bayou on November 12; and Mercer Arboretum’s Children’s Story Time in the Garden on November 21.

Federation & District News—Carolynne announced she had submitted our yearbook, schedule, and website for award consideration to the District. She also sent the District a Bronze Level report for judging. The November Federation meetingwould be beneficial for all of us to attend, but especially for our newer members. The program is on the judging of flower shows. Carolynne is going and can take several members with her. Please call Carolynne if you would like to attend this very informative meeting. Refreshments will be served.

We are in Zone 1 of the Federation. We are to bring refreshments to the meeting on January 13. Joanne Storm also asked for greater participation than we have had in the past. Cecily Horton will provide finger sandwiches and Ginger Clark will make cookies.

Carolynne and Joanne talked about the Federation and how it benefits our club. We pay dues to this organization and should also support it with our presence and participation.

Linda Gay, Horticulturalist, gave an interesting talk on “Naturalizing Bulbs for Year Round Color.”

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Cyril Hosley, Recording Secretary

December, 2016

SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES
December 1, 2016

President Carolynne White called the meeting to order and thanked Hostess Julie Baker and Co-Hostesses Phyllis Carney, Sandy Foor, Tonya Judah, Mary Swift and Kay Veech. Carolynne welcomed our guests and asked for officer reports.

Per our new procedure, the November minutes were approved by the review committee and have been distributed by email. Please let Carolynne know if you have any corrections or additions. Minutes are now posted on the website.

Second VP/Membership--Carolyn Corbett: Carolyn asked that we welcome guests Dr. Karen Cottingham, sponsored by Bev Wiemer; Rachel Ferris, guest of Sandy Foor; and, Analisa Frazier, guest of Alex Tyson. Analisa was attending her second meeting.

Carolynne White thanked the Nominating Committee--Janet Kohlhase, Julie Baker and Carolyn Corbett--for their hard work in selecting new officers for the 2017-2018 Executive Board slate. Carolynne then turned the meeting over to Nominating Committee Chairman Janet Kohlhase.

Nominating Committee –Chairman Janet Kohlhase presented the following slate of officers for the 2017-2018 Southampton Garden Club Executive Board:

President—Joanne King
1st Vice President (Programs)—Cecily Horton
2nd Vice President (Membership)—Joanne Storm
3rd Vice President (Yearbook)—Janet Kohlhase
4th Vice President (Flower Show)—vacant
5th Vice President (Web Master)—Carolynne White
Treasurer—Sandy Foor
Social Committee—Adrienne Stokes and Trienet del Valle
Recording Secretary—Sydney Jelinek
Corresponding Secretary—Julie Baker
Parliamentarian—Sherrie Glass
Horticulture—Lorene Williams
Historian—vacant
Excursions—Tonya Judah
A La Carte/Green Thumb Events—Edie Archer
Fleming Park Pollinator Garden Committee Chairman—Mary Howe Hawkins
Federation Liaison (proposed new position)—Carolynne White
Immediate Past President—Carolynne White

Janet explained that two positions are still vacant and she would love for members to step forward to fill those vacancies. Any member interested in the position of Flower Show Chairman or Historian should contact Janet Kohlhase.

Carolynne White asked for a motion to accept the proposed slate. A motion was made by Leslie King to accept the slate of officers presented by the Nominating Committee for the 2017-2018 Executive Board. The motion was seconded by Phyllis Carney and passed unanimously.

The Board will discuss the proposed new position of Federation Liaison at its January meeting and report to the membership at the February meeting.

2018 Flower Show Discussion—President Carolynne White gave a plea for someone to step forward as Chairman of the 2018 Flower Show. Carolynne explained that we do a small standard flower show each year. We cannot do a flower show without a chairman. She assured members that finding co-chairmen would not be a problem. And, Carolynne promised that she would work on the Flower Show also. But, we really need someone new to step up and volunteer to take on the lead position. The same people cannot continue to do this yearly.

Should we not have a volunteer for Flower Show Chairman, Carolynne suggested we consider putting on a flower show every other year. On the “off” years, she asked that we think about having a workshop where we would have a speaker and do an in-depth study of some aspect of design. Each participant would do a design of the same type, which would then be displayed at an evening party. The designs would not be judged, but simply enjoyed.

While details of the workshop and other aspects of the day will be decided later, Carolynne took a straw poll of members in attendance to see potential support for this idea. A show of hands indicated a great deal of interest in the suggestion. The board will discuss the proposal at the January board meeting and present ideas to the membership in February. We will also investigate how this change would affect our standing within the Texas Garden Clubs organization.

Fourth VP/Flower Show—Chairman Phyllis Carney: Placement cards are available for the 2017 show. Please sign up today. We still need a location for the Novice Workshop. Let Phyllis know if you are able to volunteer your home.

Treasurer—Adrienne Stokes: 2016-2017 dues of $75.00 are currently due. Bank balance is $5211.67. Four members still owe dues for the current year.
.
A La Carte/Green Thumb Events—Edie Archer presented members with fun things to do in Houston in December. Those included:

February, 2017

SOUTHAMPTON GARDEN CLUB MINUTES
February 2, 2017

President Carolynne White called the meeting to order and thanked Hostess Lorene Williams and Co-Hostesses Susan Bishop, Sue Bleakie, and Pat Burgess. Carolynne welcomed everyone and wished all a belated Happy New Year, Happy Groundhog Day, Happy Valentine’s Day, and Happy President’s Day!

The club’s next meeting is March 2, 2017, at the home of Mary Howe Hawkins, 1818 Sunset Blvd. Co-hostesses will be Sydney Jelinek, Tonya Judah and Cyril Hosley. Refreshments begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by the meeting at 10:00.

Per our new procedure, the December minutes were approved by the review committee and were distributed by email. Minutes are posted on the website. Corrections or additions should be directed to Carolynne

Carolynne asked the membership if there was any objection to the new procedure to approve the minutes by committee rather than taking up valuable meeting time to do so. There was no objection to the procedure. Therefore, we will continue to ask a three-person committee to read the minutes in depth, make corrections or additions, and then the approved minutes will be posted to the website. This way, members are able to use the information in a timely manner.

President’s Report—Carolynne said she has sent in her President’s Report for our club to the Texas Garden Clubs. She noted that we might be able to add more community service projects with little or no effort. Suggestions she made were sending a bouquet to a nursing home or a book collection for children. At this point, the membership did not seem eager to assume more responsibilities beyond Fleming Park. This will be further discussed at a later meeting.

Board of Directors Meeting Report—Dues for 2017-2018 will remain at $75.00

Because we do not have an actual budget, many board members thought it would be helpful to generate one based on past expenditures. Treasurer Adrienne Stokes will pull together the historical data available. A committee (Sherrie Glass, Chairman; Susan Broer and Cyril Hosley) will review these expenditures and make budget recommendations. This information will be presented at the May meeting.

Meetings closely following holidays can have a negative impact on our attendance. In looking at the calendar for 2017-18, we are able to keep the September meeting on our regular first-Thursday meeting day, since that is one week after Labor Day. The 2018 Combined Board Meeting, however, will be moved from January 4 to January 11.

The membership voted to have a Workshop and Reception in 2018 rather than our traditional April Flower Show. Joanne Storm has agreed to coordinate that event. Her assistant will be Susan Broer. They will ask Susan Baiamonte if she will also serve as an assistant.

Asking for direction from the membership, Joanne wanted to know if this should be competitive or not? Should we meet in one location or in small groups in homes? Do we want to invite a judge to critique our designs so we can learn from the experience? Those in attendance indicated they would like this to be non-competitive, would prefer to be together for the workshop, and would like to have a judge come to the reception and give us feedback. Joanne also indicated she needs a home for the reception the night of the workshop.

Second VP/Membership--Carolyn Corbett: Carolyn asked that we welcome Joanne Storm’s guest, Maya Berkovich. Maya lives at 1836 Albans. Her husband is an anesthesiologist at Methodist Hospital and she has two adult children. Analisa Frazier, guest of Alex Tyson, was attending her third meeting. She lives at 1639 Bissonnet. Her recommendation letters will be submitted this month and she will be considered for membership at the March meeting. Beth Zdlblick, guest of Julie Baker, is a new resident of Southampton. She lives at 2132 Rice Blvd. Her husband, Nick, was a roommate with Julie’s son while they were students at Rice University.

Social Committee—Julie Baker: Hostess and Co-hostesses are needed for next year. A list of dates was passed around. Please volunteer. We all love meeting in member’s homes, but it cannot be done without everyone’s willingness to participate in hosting.

2017 Flower Show—Joanne King gave a plea for people to sign up for a placement. We have 10 empty spots. Schedules for the show are available. Thanks were offered to Susan Broer, Lorene Williams and Joanne Storm for their help in preparing the schedule. There is a Design division, Horticulture division and Photography division. Photos will be matted for exhibiting and should be delivered to Joanne King by March 20. Questions about the show should be directed to Show Chairman Phyllis Carney or Co-Chairman Joanne King. There will be a Novice Workshop at Joanne King’s in mid-March. Exact time and date will be announced at the March meeting. Flower show placements are also on-line.

We need members to sign up to bring food to the Flower Show in April. Hostess, Ellena Dickerson, asked that we make the reception “finger food” so people don’t have to sit at a table to enjoy refreshments.

Website—Carolynne White asks that you continue to give her feedback on the website.

Treasurer--Adrienne Stokes announced a bank balance of $5456.30. We do still have two members who owe dues for the current year.

Houston Federation News—Zone 1 was hostess for the January meeting. Carolynne thanked members Ginger Clark and Cecily Horton for providing refreshments on behalf of our club.

The Federation February 10, 2017 program is “Inspired by Art; Created by Designers.” Speakers are from the group Houston Designing Women. They have been in existence for ten years and our club is proud that we have two of our members, Joanne Storm and Susan Baiamonte, who are a part of this group.

The Federation March 10, 2017 program is “The Art of Garden Photography” by Lana Kelley. Following the program there will be a workshop employing the art of digital photography, also presented by Lana Kelly. Call Carolynne if you would like to attend the workshop.

Yearbook—Janet Kohlhase indicated that new members should contact her to have their photo made for the Yearbook. Also, any member who wishes to have a new photo can submit one to Janet or can have one made at the March meeting.

SGC Aprons—Adrienne Stokes still has a few of our green aprons for sale. Cost is $20.

Horticulture—Lorene Williams said it is time to clean up the freeze damage we’ve had recently. Also, we will have another plant exchange in May. This can be something from your own garden or something you buy. It can be for inside or outside the house. Lorene also gave a tip for making tulips stand upright longer in a flower arrangement. Take a needle and stick it through the stem just below the flower. The theory is that this allows air to escape, keeping the flower more upright.

Workshop/Excursions Chair—Tonya Judah is working on something for either March or April. She will have more information at our March meeting.

A La Carte/Green Thumb Events—Edie Archer presented members with fun things to do in Houston in February. Those included:

February 11, Class on spring tomatoes and vegetables at Buchanan’s Nursery, www.buchanansplants.com

February 10 and 11, Tapas on the Trails. 5-9 p.m. at the Houston Arboretum. Cocktails and appetizers for $75 per person

February 17-19. NRG Home and Garden Show at NRG Center

February 17-19, Lone Star Daylily Society Sale—55 varieties at NRG Home & Garden Show

February 25, Opening of Levy Park, 10 a.m., 3801 Eastside

Classes at Arbor Gate in Tomball: Feb. 4, Fruit Culture Day; Feb. 9, Container Gardening; Feb. 11, Heirloom Vegetables; Feb. 25, Rose Pruning. www.arborgate.com

Houston Zoo’s eighth pollinator garden opens. Visit www.houstonzoo.org for detailed study of pollinators and their importance

Fleming Park Garden—Mary Howe Hawkins said there is no reason to schedule a workday until late March or early April.

Historian—Gail Viele announced that she would be out of town during March and May and asked if someone would volunteer to take photos at the meetings. A discussion followed in which it was determined that keeping archives was no longer of interest to the club and this position is being eliminated next year. If something special were to happen, any member could snap a photo with their cell phone to document the event. Otherwise there will be no effort to formally take photos for the club.

Programs Chairman Joanne King introduced our speaker, Suzanne Milstead, who gave a very interesting talk and power point on “Focal Points for the Small Garden.”

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Cyril Hosley, Recording Secretary

April 5, 2018 is being considered. She will contact the West Gray multipurpose center to see if we can hold our workshops there. Joanne Storm said there would be money available to buy flowers for the workshop. With these options in mind there would be no horticulture or judges luncheon. Susan Broer commented it is difficult to get people to make flower arrangements, so if the show is more relaxed and there is no judging, there may be more participation. Phyllis Carney mentioned the possibility of having judges come for comments only and no scores. A motion was made to vote on a non-judged informal show for 2018. Mary Swift seconded the motion. A vote was held and the motion carried for an informal non-judged flower show for 2018. The decision about including horticulture will be discussed at a later date.

A committee will be formed to plan the flower workshop. Discussion arose on whether or not flower design should be mandatory with Carolyn Corbett opposed.

Patricia Sommers and Joanne Storm will co-chair the 2018 Flower Show. Teresa Frierson has offered to host the Flower Show in 2018. Her address is 2338 Quenby.
